Jewel weed- Folk remedy for poison ivy!

 Jewel weed is in the Balsaminaceae family and is also called Spotted Touch-Me-Not . It is an annual plant growing 3-5 ft tall and  flowers  from June to September                       It usually grows in shady moist  areas near water.  The leaves and stems are crushed into  poultice form as a well known folk remedy for poison ivy. Ice cubes made from jewel weed tea can also be used topically on rashes.

 Jewel weed contains a compound called lawsone in its leaves that has been proven to have anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory properties.
